Before and after: a cosy granny's bedroom

The 50th anniversary episode of "Home Idea with IKEA" invites us to Kaunas. The occasion is special, no less than the heroine of this week, the golden-ager Laima who is bursting with joy and energy. Having worked as an accountant all her life, she has finally discovered her true vocation and now spends most of her time with her grandchildren. Laima is full of love for the little ones yet tends to forget showing some of it to herself. She lives in an old apartment and sleeps on the couch in the room that used to belong to her already adult daughters. Together with the interior designer Laura, we came to furnish a bedroom that she has fairly deserved.

Before the renovation

Laima's grandchildren encouraged her to start the makeovers. Granny's room, where the little ones spend time together, was in their words “outmoded and ugly”. The uncomfortable space has already asked for refurbishment: worn-out furniture, discoloured wallpapers and an inconvenient sofa didn’t match Laima’s bright personality. The only thing that made her happy in this room was the height measurements of her growing grandchildren next to the door.

Challenges and results

When Laura arrived at this room, she started working immediately. Her goal was to create the bedroom suitable for sleep and quality rest, as well as to set cosier atmosphere and to leave enough room for grandmother's and grandchildren's belongings.

The interior designer decided to start with the colour scheme of the room. New brighter colours will make the space visually larger and cosier, while the changed room layout will make it easier to move around.
 

Room for storage and rest

Laima’s greatest wish was to have a soft and comfortable bed. The HAUGA upholstered bed frame with a soft mattress will be comfortable to sleep on, while its soft, padded headboard will be pleasant to lean against. Even more, there’s plenty of space under the bed for storage boxes – easy to roll out and perfect for storing extra quilts and pillows.

To save space in the small bedroom and to leave more room for moving around the bed, the interior designer chose the PAX wardrobe with a sliding doors. Laima will be able to store her clothes inside the drawers, on many shelves or hang them on the rail. To reach all boxes on top, she can use the BEKVÄM step stool. As for the items of Laima’s grandchildren, they can be stored inside two chests of drawers in front of the bed.
 

Room for time with grandchildren

In the evenings, Laima enjoys reading and looking through albums with her grandchildren. This is why we decided to dedicate the entire wall for their hobby. EKET wall cabinets do more than just decorate the space. They are modular, therefore can be combined and appended if there’s a need to accommodate more books or albums. The soft REMSTA armchair in traditional style will also be handy for a cosy we-time. It is comfortable to sit on while reading books to the grandchildren being snug in bed.

The RAST chests of drawers made of untreated solid wood can be oiled, waxed, lacquered, or stained. To match them to the new interior, we painted them the same colour as the bedroom walls and replaced the knobs.
 

Room for beauty and style

Laima is not only a loving grandmother, but also a stylish woman who loves taking care of her looks. Therefore, next to the chests of drawers for grandchildren, the interior designer has planned a nook for her beauty procedures. In addition to Laima's old mirror, which she wanted to keep, there also is a HAUGA dressing table that can turn into a desk if needed.
