“Home idea with IKEA”: from family living room to mother's bedroom

This week’s hero, Neringa—a single mother—lives in a two-bedroom flat with three kids: her six-year-old and sixteen-year-old daughters, and her nine-year-old son. Their apartment, located in an old town building, has been in need of renovation for some time. Neringa decided to begin the makeover with the living room—the most spacious room, where she and her children spend most of their time. Here, they relax on the sofa while watching TV, store clothes and other belongings, and Neringa herself even sleeps. Thanks to our interior designers, Ema and Dominyka, the family brought their dream living room to life.

Before the renovation

Interior designers‘ task:

Fit two rooms into a small space: the living room, where the family spends time together during the day, must transform into the mother’s bedroom at night.
Create storage solutions for the mother’s and children’s clothes, as well as other family belongings.
Make practical use of the room’s layout, considering its height and the heating pipes running from floor to ceiling in the corner.
Design an interior in light, earthy, neutral tones—nothing bold or flashy, just as Neringa prefers.

Clutter, be gone!

Before our interior designers stepped in, the living room was a bit chaotic, with things scattered everywhere. Now, the space feels more unified and harmonious, and every item has its place.

We swapped the old sofa for a new BÅRSLÖV three-seat sofa-bed. It effortlessly transforms into a spacious double bed when needed and offers extra storage underneath for various household items. The cover has been treated with easy-care, which means that spills won’t seep into the fabric—perfect for a home with kids or pets!

Next to the sofa, we added a practical footstool—ideal for stretching out and unwinding after a long day. Inside, there’s hidden storage for books, board games, blankets or anything else the family wants within reach but out of sight.

For screen time and me time

The main living room wall is designed for the TV area, but with a clever mix of PLATSA and BESTÅ systems, there’s room for much more. The smart storage solution is highly versatile: on the left, a wardrobe seamlessly transitions into a TV bench, while on the right, a creatively repurposed kitchen worktop doubles as both a workspace and a beauty corner.

LINDBYN mirrors are designed for bathrooms but fit beautifully anywhere in the home. Each mirror in the series comes with a safety film to minimise damage if the glass breaks.

Good night, sleep tight

We dedicated part of the room to a sleeping area with the IDANÄS upholstered bed frame and a VESTERÖY mattress, chosen to suit Neringa’s sleep habits. The pocket springs, built edge to edge, allow for good airflow, while the top foam layer ensures a soft and comfortable rest.

An invisible wall

There’s no need to build a wall to separate two areas—an open storage system like ELVARLI creates privacy without shrinking the space or blocking natural light.
