Lounge & leisure area at KTU

Office premises that experienced the most significant transformation during the pandemic continue to evolve. They are now being planned not only with workspaces but also with multifunctional leisure areas in consideration. Our business interior designer Ūla Žebrauskaitė-Malinauskė is convinced that even small spaces can meet the different needs of employees. The lounge and leisure area at Kaunas University of Technology proves her right.

“In each case, we tailor our approach to meet the customer's needs, aligning with the culture of their organisation, brand colours or the desired mood. The lounge area interior is modern, characterized by dominant black, beige, wood, and blue accents. The request to showcase a painting by the artist A. Kriščiūnas for the 100th KTU alumni graduation played a pivotal role in determining the direction and colour palette in this area.”

The purpose of the premises has undergone a radical transformation, converting the former working offices into a lounge and dining area, a feature previously absent at the university. Despite its modest size – approximately 50 square meters – the space now accommodates not only workstations but also a dining area, sofas for relaxation, a reading corner, and a dedicated children's area.

“Today, successful organizations are those that support employees in achieving a balance between their work and family life and commitments, both within and outside the workplace. Our employee surveys have indicated a desire for more comfortable and functional spaces for relaxation and lunch breaks, as well as a dedicated area where employees can bring their children after school, during holidays, or in the event of unforeseen circumstances. This is precisely the purpose we aimed to fulfil with our lounge and leisure area.”

The ability to transform or compactly stack furniture enables a more flexible use of space. For instance, extendable tables that can be adjusted in size based on requirements, gathered together or dispersed, are highly beneficial when organising events for employees' children or arranging informal meetings.
