Wing chairs were the height of fashion in the 1950s and IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad had long been planning to expand his range with upholstered furniture too and this was the chance. MK, the predecessor of STRANDMON, wing chair was launched in 1951, and was one of the first pieces of upholstered furniture to be launched at IKEA.
Over the years, wing chairs have become classics that are still in demand today. Armchair definitely had to be adapted to modern needs in terms of sustainability and comfort – people‘s lives now differ in many respects from those of the 1960s. Still traditional, high-quality, comfortable armchairs remain desirable today and that was one of the reasons that led to a comeback for the product in 2012, under a new guise and a new name: STRANDMON.
Current version of wing chair had to undergo a lot of tough quality tests before it reached the market – STRANDMON has been tested to make sure a person can sit down on it and get out of it at least 50 000 times. That’s equivalent to sitting in it and getting up again once a day for 136 years and beautifully meets all IKEA Democratic Design principles.
Products for long term enjoyment
Every IKEA product is developed following the Democratic Design principles. It is how IKEA designers create every home furnishing item ensuring it meets the good function, beautiful form, securing low prices, sustainability and ensuring long-lasting quality.
For us quality is when objects and materials last over time. We create it through the way we make IKEA products, the materials we use, how well products function, the safety of our products and more.
At IKEA, quality is defined by our customers perception. By investing in the right level of product quality from the start we can ensure we meet the needs of the many people in the most cost effective and efficient way.
A product’s quality and durability is experienced by customers as they use the product over time, care for it and, potentially, repair or disassemble, reassemble it when needed. As Ingvar Kamprad said: “Whatever the consumer purchases shall give long-term enjoyment“.
STRANDMON wing chair has found a special spot in Lithuania‘s people homes too. With its 5 colors in a range, dark grey wins the game followed by yellow one.
