“Home idea with IKEA”: turning the children's room into a bedroom for two image 1
This week, we invite you to visit Jolita and Algimantas from Kaunas and their three-room apartment. Formerly the largest room in this apartment belonged to their children. Now, when the grown up kids have left home, the couple decided to pamper themselves on their 30th wedding anniversary and to turn this room into their very own bedroom. IKEA interior designer Laura came to help, and now you can check the result! For even more ideas and practical tips, browse the IKEA digital catalogue.

Children’s room, guest chamber or home office?
After the son and daughter moved out, the children’s room served both as a place to accommodate guests or work from home, and as a pantry. Before the renovation, it featured a bunch of mismatched furniture for a variety of purposes: an outdated sofa, a huge desk, a shelf, a coffee table, and a far-too-small closet that could hardly hold all of Jolita's clothes, leaving absolutely no room for Algimantas, as he joked.

“The main mission of the bedroom is to provide a high-quality comfort and rest. However, Jolita and Algimantas not only relax, but also spend all their free time in this room. So I wanted to design a bedroom that fits everything: a comfortable bed, a spacious closet, and a corner for leisure. The project was inspired by their beloved Scandinavian style and Jolita's favourite blue tones.”

A bedroom hero
Since Jolita and Algimantas spend most of their time in the bedroom, their bed had to be as spacious and comfortable as possible. This is why a wide MALM double bed with drawers and a mattress tailored to the needs of the couple became a star of the new interior. The under bed drawers are perfect for storing bedding and off-season clothes in vacuum bags. As for the upper part of the bed, the interior designer has chosen a bedspread, bedding and pillowcases in colours matching the walls to give the whole interior a unified look.

More than just a wardrobe
For the clothes that previously used to fall off the shelves and had a hard time fitting on the rack, Laura has designed a large PAX corner wardrobe with lighting. Now it has enough space not only to hang all the garments or store shoes, but also to hide a broom or a vacuum cleaner.

A cosy nook for leisure
While being at home, Jolita and Algimantas prefer passive leisure, such as reading, watching TV or discussing relevant topics. Laura kept that in mind when setting up their bedroom. She mounted some shelves for books on the wall near the bed, so one wouldn’t even have to climb out of it to reach their favourite book. In front of the bed, she has planned the BESTÅ TV furniture combination. The cabinets of different depths and finishes are convenient for storing TV accessories and for hiding other small items inside.

“It is recommended to have three types of lighting at home: general, task and accent. In this bedroom, a ceiling lamp with three shades illuminates the entire area, two additional lamps behind the bed allow to read comfortably, and a small lamp next to the TV helps to create a romantic, relaxing atmosphere.”
