We believe that home is the most important place in the world. This is why every year IKEA conducts a global research called “Life at home”. The research aims to find out how people live at home and understand what makes their life at home better. 

For our relationship with home, 2020 has been like no other. Life at home was unexpectedly and fundamentally disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. We always understood the importance of a safe place to call home. So this year, we decided to focus on exploring the impact of the global pandemic on life at home – now and in the years to come.

Many people began to reconnect with the role and value of their home in their lives. The vast majority of us feel closer to our homes than we did before the pandemic. Now, many of us are making plans to protect this newfound closeness – and the wellbeing it offers us – in our future lives at home. We call it the Big Home Reboot.

Garden at home
During the quarantine, 41% of people in Lithuania started dreaming of having their own outdoor space or at least a green corner at home. Therefore, Lina Liubertaitė, the author of the gardening blog "Geltonas karutis" shares her tips on how to grow a piece of nature at home, even if you do not have a yard or a balcony.
Restaurant at home
If you lack ideas on what to cook for your family or just want to pamper yourself, try some recipes of Renata Ničajienė, famous food blogger and author of culinary books. She knows how to prepare a hearty lunch or a restaurant-worthy dinner at home. And she uses potatoes as the main ingredient.

Gym at home
1 in 5 Lithuanians enjoyed exercising at home and will continue to do more of it in the future. This is why a sports coach Rita Girdvainytė is sharing some active exercises you can do at home. All you need is one square meter of empty floorspace and 5 to 7 minutes each day.

Changes at home
After spending more time at home, many of us began to rethink what a good home really means. Some of us felt to have a safe haven, while others realized there was something to improve. Renata Dantė, IKEA Corporate Communication Manager, and Eglė Čyvė, IKEA Communication and Interior Design Manager, talk about how Lithuanians renovated their homes during quarantine and what they plan to improve in the future.

Pandemic changed our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Millions of people stayed in their homes all over the world. The spaces in which we lived transformed into offices, schools, gyms, playgrounds and social spaces. All at once, home became the centre of our worlds. After spending more time at home, many of us realized there is room for improvement. 64% of people in Lithuania said that home was their sanctuary during the 2020 lockdown measures. Our homes offered us a place to escape to and find solace from the turbulence of global events. Here, we found comfort in familiarity, security and ownership in the little that was within our control.

A closer relationship with home is here to stay. We started using home in new ways and we enjoyed it. 39% of Lithuanians enjoyed cooking, 37% loved spending more time with family, while 35% were happy to have more of 'me-time'. And we hope to continue doing so beyond the pandemic restrictions.
