“Home idea with IKEA”: old meets new in the authentic kitchen
Welcome to Arvydas and Justina‘s kitchen! Although this couple owns the whole house, it’s namely the kitchen where they spend the most of their time: cooking, sitting by the fireplace or even using their beloved dining table for work. It seems like they have a perfect spot and couldn‘t ask for more. But is it really so? Our interior designer Justina came to their home to find out what else is still missing and to help make the couple’s dreams come true.
Wait, where is the fridge?
Before the renovation, the couple’s kitchen was cosy but not quite functional. The inherited wooden dining table held a special place in their hearts, but it also took up most of the space. The couple lacked room for prepping and cooking, there was too little storage for dinnerware and kitchen utensils, and the fridge had to be placed in the hallway.
Interior designer‘s task
The husband and wife were dreaming of a new, cosier kitchen that could keep their beloved old furniture: a dining table, chairs and, of course, a fireplace. Our interior designer had a challenging task to combine the old and the new in one room, dividing the space in such a way that would allow accommodating not only the dining set but also a functional kitchen with enough space for cooking, storage and all the necessary appliances.
Here it is, the new kitchen!
For Arvydas and Justina‘s kitchen, we have chosen METOD cabinet frames with traditional BODBYN fronts in grey, matching the overall style of the house and the colour of the old dining chairs. In addition to the many drawers, cabinets and a wide worktop, now there‘s even room for waste sorting bins and a fridge that once didn‘t fit. Storage inside the cabinets has also been considered: various inserts and dividers are here to keep plates, pots, knives, cutlery, and spice jars organised.
All METOD kitchen furniture is covered under the 25-year guarantee.
Something old, something new
The interior designer has kept a number of old kitchen furnishings: not only the dining table and chairs, but also the owners‘ ceiling lamp as well as the wooden floor to which Justina has matched the new pieces of furniture. In addition to the old details, the room now also features some new and bold accents in red: two extra chairs for the guests, a hand-tufted rug and a HEMNES cupboard, the true hero of the new kitchen.
“Glass door cabinets provide more storage space without overloading the kitchen. It can be either standard kitchen cabinets or a freestanding cupboard. You can even choose the cupboard in a different colour from the regular kitchen set. Then, it will not only provide extra storage for crockery, glasses, tablecloths, decorations or recipe books, but also make a striking accent to the interior.”
Justina Koskauskė, IKEA interior designer
Warm and bright
In the old kitchen, the couple‘s favourite thing to do was spending time in front of the fireplace. This is why we decided to give more attention to this area by placing there two SANDARED pouffes and a rug.
We also took care of the lighting. As there were no electrical switches in the room, we have installed some smart lighting solutions to compensate the lack of light. Individual SKURUP spotlights above the kitchen worktop can be controlled remotely.
